VOICES FROM THE
PAST
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The apostle Paul wrote to his protégé Timothy.
“I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the
time is favourable or unfavourable; convince rebuke, and encourage, with
the utmost patience in teaching.”
The
Newfoundland and Labrador Conference, first Methodist and then United
Church of Canada have placed preaching at the heart of its public
worship. From the pulpits of our churches ministers Ordained and Lay
have proclaimed the Word of God with dedicated fervour. It is fitting
that we remember some of these preachers who have given voice to the
word of God.
Although these sermons may be dated in language and in some cases
theological perspective, the Christian Message remains relevant for
today. Many of the preachers featured in this series of sermons served
the church for more than three decades. Countless ministers serving the
church today in this and conferences across the country were mentored by
these fine servants of God. It is the hope of this project that you
will enjoy reading and perhaps remembering some of these sermons being
preached as well as the ministers who preached them.
