GENERAL SECRETARY'S WEEKLY LETTER - MARCH 1ST, 2010
Dear Colleagues and Friends: Watching the Canadian women’s hockey team win the gold medal game last night, I was reminded of a time when I was in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, a few years ago. Some of the people wondered if I was related to Hayley Wickenheiser, who had done a hockey clinic for the kids of the community. They thought I looked like her. I’m not sure that I do, but then again, they didn’t really know that many people of my race. Click here for more

ASH WEDNESDAY MESSAGE FROM THE MODERATOR
Dear Friends in Christ,

Last Friday I was warmly greeted with a fresh cup of coffee at the office of the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.

Shortly after a nice chat with staff, when I had been sufficiently lulled into a false sense of security, Conference Executive Secretary Bruce Faurschou suddenly produced a video camera and asked me to respond to Jesus' question, "Who do you say that I am?"

GENERAL SECRETARY'S WEEKLY LETTER - FEBRUARY 12TH, 2010
Dear Colleagues and Friends:
There is a scene in the movie “The White Ribbon” where a little boy whose mother is dead and whose father is in the hospital after an accident has a conversation about death with the woman who is caring for him. This stark exchange is riveting in its detail and simplicity, including a part where the boy asks, “Does everybody die? Everybody?” When he is assured that this is true, he asks, “There is no way out?” and he is told that there isn’t. This is one of the movies nominated for an Academy Award in the foreign film category. It is hard to imagine such a script forming part of an American movie. Click here for more

UPDATED EAST DISTRICT MANSE INSPECTIONS FORMS AVAILABLE

The short form is for the use of local Manse Committees on an annual basis so that:
(1) an annual inspection is actually carried out, and

It is suggested that the form be downloaded and used as soon as possible after the pastoral charge annual meetings so that we have a record of chairpersons, etc. Click here for the short form

UPDATE ON CIDA MATCHING FUNDS FOR HAITI DONATIONS
The approval process for organizations to receive matching funds for donations designated for Haiti relief is not automatic. The United Church of Canada, along with the other Canadian churches and agencies that are members of Canadian Churches in Action (CCA), is submitting a detailed proposal to CIDA requesting that all donations be matched dollar for dollar by the Canadian government. We expect that this request will be approved—as it was in the case of the tsunami in 2004. Click here for more
