Newfoundland and Labrador Conference

With joy in our hearts and a song on our lips we,

the Newfoundland and Labrador conference of The United Church of Canada,

believe that we are called by God to love and serve others.

Through our various shared ministries in the name of Jesus Christ,

we are called to uphold the gifts and skills in each other;

to honour differences;

to be accepting of change while honouring heritage and traditions;

to seek justice

and through all of this to know that we are not alone.

Thanks be to God

About Us

Let your adventure in ministry begin here in the Newfoundland and Labrador Conference. This is the most easterly Conference within The United Church of Canada. A Conference whose borders are the same as the provincial borders. It's a place that Microsoft recognizes as having its own time zone. And why not. It's where the sun rises first. It's the newest province with an incredible past.

Regional Council Boundaries and Draft Staffing Models

To Newfoundland and Labrador Conference:

1. Regional Council Boundaries

On Wednesday, January 10, 2018, the interim report of the Boundaries Commission was released to the church at large. You can find it at http://www.united-church.ca/news/interim-report-regional-council-boundaries  with a feedback period of January 10-31, 2018. We have been named a Region -- Region number 17 of 17. So the boundaries of the Newfoundland and Labrador Conference will remain the same in the new system if nothing changes between now and the final report. That is good news indeed and is what we as a Conference had recommended. In the next while the church will respond to the Commission and give them feedback on what they think about the decision.

2. Draft Staffing Models

On Thursday, January 11, 2018, we received from the Remit Implementation Task Group three Draft Staffing Models for the Regional Councils, based on the interim report of the Boundaries Commission. Please see attached to the full article the three models being proposed. Your three Executives (East/West/Conference) are meeting on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 to compile feedback to General Council. There is a very tight timeline for providing our response. We have only until Friday, January 19, 2018 to respond so our feedback can get to the next task group meeting on January 22, 2018.

We are looking for your feedback on what staffing model you feel would best suit the church in our Region and as a whole. The reality is with any of the proposed models, there will be a change for our Conference and our staff. We will no longer, under the models proposed, have a five member staff that we now have in our Conference. Therefore we need your feedback to help with the discussion about what you think will best serve the church, our congregations/pastoral charges in these changing times.

Please respond by Monday, January 15, 2018, by 1:00 pm by responding to with your feedback on the draft staffing models. My apologies for the late notice but we have only a few short days to respond and we would like your feedback at the Executives’ Meeting.

As you look at each of the draft models presented, please think about the following:

1. What do you like about this model?

2. What causes concern?

3. How could the model be improved?

4. What questions do you have?

If none of these models reflect what you think is reasonable/workable, what would you suggest?

I ask that you hold our staff in your prayers as we walk into uncertain times and monumental life changes.

Blessings,

Faith
