The Pine Hill Alumni Campbell-Carmichael
Travelling Fellowship

Pine Hill Divinity Hall, in conjunction with the United Church Faculty Group of Atlantic School of Theology, offers a fellowship once every three years to assist United Church of Canada graduates of Pine Hill Divinity Hall and Atlantic School of Theology in pursuing advanced, post-graduate theological studies. The fellowship is intended to allow successful applicants to enroll at recognized institutions of learning other than Atlantic School of Theology. It permits for studies on a full-time or part-time basis but requires normal registration at the chosen institution.

The award is valued at $7,500 (Canadian).

Applications are invited through the Secretary of the Board of Governors of Pine Hill Divinity Hall. The United Church Faculty Group will screen and assess the applications received and do so in conjunction with the Bursary committee of Pine Hill Divinity Hall. The decision to award the fellowship is based on three aspects:

1. the seriousness and viability of the applicant’s proposal for study to be undertaken

2. the applicant’s previous academic record

3. the expected contribution the proposed study is to make to the life and work of the church. (A brief essay on how the study is to benefit the church’s ministry is to accompany the application.)

Successful applicants who undertake full-time studies will receive the full award at the outset of their studies (upon certification of registration). Those whose studies are pursued on a part-time basis will be awarded the funds in installments based on the length of the program of studies (and upon certification of registration).

The deadline for applications is February 1st, in the years when the fellowship is awarded. The decision will be announced on the following September 1^st. The successful applicant shall begin the program of studies in the academic year following the announcement of the award.

The United Church of Canada graduates of the Master of Theological Studies Program are eligible to apply for the fellowship. In addition to the requirements for application stated above, they also need to certify that they have met the stated criteria for admission into the chosen program of the institution (such as the preliminary year of a Ph.D. program.) Preference will be given to those already admitted to the program of choice.

It is proposed that the next award of the Campbell-Carmichael fellowship be for the academic year 2009-2010, and that the deadline for that application be February 1, 2009.
